Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust played a significant role in my recovery. The trust helps to rebuild confidence after cancer, using sailing to support, empower and inspire young people between the ages of 8-24. I went on my first 4-day trip in 2010 aged 14. The trip was amazing and ignited a life-long passion in sailing and the outdoors although I didn’t realize this at the time.

I can still remember the excitement I felt on the first day; driving to QMC hospital for the drop-off point, continuing the journey on with other young people in similar situations to Red Jet Ferry Terminal in Southampton to make our way to the Isle of Wight. The freedom I felt was incredible; it was my first time away from my family since being ill and a world away from being stuck on a ward- although I was a little nervous!

Throughout the 4 days we got up to so much from, being introduced to the boats, how to walk on pontoons, building new friendships, playing games, having BBQ’s on the beach, cooking and cleaning for ourselves, a surprise rib (powerboat) ride, water fights, sailing and so much more.

I went on the trips from 2010 to 2015. They were amazing and I always learned something new. From 2016 I started to train as a volunteer as I wanted to give something back and inspire others going through similar situations to mine. From 2017 I regularly volunteer for them.

The Ellen MacArthur Trust had a massive impact on me and without them I would not be who and where I am today.

I didn’t have much interest in sport when I was a child and never particularly liked ball sports due to my poor coordination. The trust helped rebuild my confidence, introduced me to new opportunities and helped me gain experience in social situations with people my own age range.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has changed my life for the better; it has given so much ambition and I would love to one day get my Yachtmaster Certificate and gain enough experience to take part in a round-the-world sailing race whilst still focusing on helping others.
